Greg Wall, Rabbi Emeritus

Rabbi Greg Wall served as Head Rabbi of Beit Chaverim from 2013 to 2024.

He grew up in the Boston area and came to the NYC area in 1982 to seek his fortune as a Jazz saxophonist. He has performed at top New York venues like the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He toured internationally for years while also learning continuously with a Torah study partner, often from airports and backstage “green rooms.”

Greg began his rabbinic studies in 2003 as a member of the Livingston (NJ) Community Kollel and received semicha/ordination in 2006 from HaRav Doniel Channen of Beit Shemesh, Israel. He also received semicha in 2007 from HaRav Zalman Nechemia Goldberg ZT"L, head of the Beit Din of Jerusalem, as well as a third semicha from HaRav She'ar Yashuv Cohen, ZT"L, Chief Rabbi of Haifa.

R' Greg was rabbi of the 6th St. Community Synagogue in Manhattan's East Village from 2009-2012. He founded the celebrated Center For Jewish Arts and Literacy, where he served as Rabbi and Artistic Director, and attracted folks from all over the Tri-State area to his innovative programming combining Jewish Learning with cutting edge and traditional performances of Jewish music, visual arts, theater, and poetry.

When R' Greg came to Westport in 2013, Beit Chaverim was a part time, weekend only shul. He started the innovative “Un-Hebrew School” featuring one-on-one Hebrew lessons and Jewish education for every child, and recruited dynamic Shabbat youth leaders for the children of the congregation. Over the next decade, R' Greg turned the shul into a full service, daily synagogue, with Westport's first (and only) daily minyan, and introduced Jewish-themed social activities like the Holy Smokes Kosher BBQ Team, Shul of Rock, Shabbat at the Beach, and the Holy Rollers Bicycle group. Rabbi Wall started offering Jewish learning opportunities for women and men, covering a wide range of Jewish topics. With the highly popular offerings Lunch 'N Learn, Talmud at Sea, Perek in the Park, The Shmorg, Jewish Lecture Series and the Caribbean based “Floating Torah Tours”.

In his spare time, R' Greg enjoys cycling, swimming, and sailing, and is a licensed scuba instructor. He also serves on the Fairfield County Va'ad of Kashrut, and is president and artistic director of JazzFC, a local non profit arts organization. He is married to Rona, and has three adult children, and eight grandchildren.
