Sobeloff Etchings

As we celebrate Israel's 60th birthday this week, our synagogue will be conducting a unique fundraiser in honor of the occasion. The synagogue will auction a set of eleven rare charcoal etchings created in Israel in the pre-state era (1930s primarily). These etching were performed by artists from the famous bezalel school in Jerusalem including the son of the school's founder Boris Schatz. The synagogue will auction off these works before Shavuot, June 8. They will be available for viewing in the synagogue and can be viewed in my e-mails and on the synagogue website. We would anticipate to raise for all 11 between $4,000 and $6,000 There is an additional story behind these etchings. They were purchased by the Hon. Simon E. Sobeloff on a trip to Israel shortly after Israel's War of Independence. Judge Sobeloff was Solicitor General during the Eisenhower administration responsible for arguing many of the crucial cases implementing the Brown v. Board of Education decision. He subsequently served as Chief Justice of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1956 - 1970. Please follow this link to learn more about Judge Sobeloff.
